To improve your Lean techniques and understanding of Lean we introduce a number of fun interactive games.
People are so much more willing to challenge working practices in a simulated environment and are quick to identify waste in the system. This provides ideal foundations for starting to challenge and find opportunities in their own areas of work. In this post, we'll talk about the "Lean Office Game".
Lean Office Game
The Lean Office Simulation exercise is a highly interactive instructional learning activity. It demonstrates in a vivid and tangible manner the benefits of process mapping, collaboration and the application of the 5 Lean Principles.
1. Value from the perspective of Customer
2. Map the Value Stream
3. Create Flow
4. Establish Pull
5. Seek perfection.
It is highly engaging and provides genuine emotional responses from participants. It facilitates a common collective objective within any group. It allows trainees from different roles and industries to work on a common process.
The simulation involves the handing and management of customer orders through a complex and clumsy administrative process. During simulation rounds, each participant ( role ) attempts to complete paperwork and to undertake record keeping and calculations. The objective is to convert the incoming orders to outgoing invoices as quickly as possible. The simulations are carefully designed to prevent a smooth flow and to induce confusion and stimulate innovation.
After each round / simulation the process is Mapped ( see attached excel chart ) so that everyone can visualise the process flow.
Trainees apply the techniques being learned during training to interrogate and debug the clumsy process. They identify, apply and test Lean 6 Sigma techniques and improvements in the simulation. The success is measurable and tangible.
Typically teams can generate improvements that are 10 fold ( 10x ) above the initial performance levels.
The dynamic simulations underpin and cement the theory which is being learned. The visual application of techniques enhances learner understanding.
It can be facilitated to accommodate groups ranging in size from 7 to 20 people. Every participant is the exercise undertakes a “Role”. The exercise can be condensed to conclude within 2 to 3 hours or can be extended to last for a few hours per day over 4 days. The longer the event the greater the learning opportunity.
