If you're in the Project Management field, or if you’ve always wanted to immerse yourself in this thriving discipline, you’ve probably wondered about what steps you need to take to get certified to advance your career. Both the Project Management Professional (PMP®) and PRINCE2® certifications are highly reputed in the field and can validate for employers your understanding of key project management concepts and how to apply them throughout the project management lifecycle.
Fundamentally, the PRINCE2® and PMP® Certifications involve two different project management frameworks. Both offer a body of knowledge and a proven approach to managing projects effectively. Picking one over the other is a decision that involves several factors. The ideal choice should be based on the industry or company you are aiming to build a career in, and the type of project you’re planning to lead or direct. Both certification programs are of equal value, albeit in different aspects of project management.
Which certification is more suitable for you based on your background and commitment to gaining certification? Well, we have outlined below a few of the key aspects of both certifications to help you figure this out:
PRINCE2 ®
There are two levels of certification, founder and practitioner. You can do a 1-week course and complete both exams, and at the end of the week, you will have your PRINCE2. It is useful and can be successfully completed fairly quickly and it provides a good background in project management and useful processes. There are also no prerequisites you must meet in order for you to attend.
You will find this course useful if you’re starting off your project management career and are committed and want to have a project management qualification under your belt. PRINCE2, for example, is commonly used in the UK as all government contracts require PRINCE2 as a minimum.
Project Management Professional (PMP)®
Unlike PRINCE 2, there are some fairly steep requisites for PMP. You need to have a minimum of 7,500 hours of project management experience, or 4,500 hours if you have a 4-year relevant degree. In addition to this, you need 35 hours of relevant training and must sit a notoriously difficult examination that asks 200 multiple choice questions over 4 hours. It goes into extensive details on project management processes but is recognised as the top-level project management qualification.
Ultimately, the choice is yours and should be based on the career you want & the companies which you want to work for. If you have any questions about our Project Management certifications, please feel free to contact one of our Learning Services Advisors today.
