One of the most important roles within a Scrum team is the Scrum Master. While Scrum teams are self-managing & self-organising, the Scrum Master advocates for Scrum within the business, ensuring that the Scrum team has all the resources necessary to deliver consistent quality & real-world value. Although a demanding role, the Scrum Master is very well respected & is a very rewarding role.
Do you want an industry-led certification or a more academic-based certification?
PSM Scrum Master
If you are looking to begin your career as a Scrum Master, you want an industry recognised and sought after certification. The Professional Scrum Master certification demonstrates that you have in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of Scrum and can also use this knowledge in a real-world setting.
There are no prerequisites you must meet before attempting the PSM Scrum Master Assessment and you don’t need to complete any CPD in order to maintain the certification. All you need to do is to attempt and successfully pass the PSM 1 online exam through Scrum.org which costs only $150.
This exam is an hour-long, consists of 80 multiple-choice, multiple-answer and true/false questions and you need to achieve a grade of at least 85% to pass.
PMI- Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI- ACP)
PMI - Agile Certified Practitioner is the Scrum Master certification of Project Management Institute, and includes not only the Scrum framework but other agile methods like Kanban, Lean or eXtreme Programming. Despite being an Agile certification, the certification model and type of test is very similar to the classic PMP, very extensive and focused on theory and academia.
Like other PMP certifications, PMI-ACP certification has minimum requirements to access it: is necessary to certify at least 2000 hours of project experience, 1500 hours working on Agile projects and at least 21 hours of training in agile practices.
Which Certification Should I Choose?
The most important question to ask yourself when beginning your career as a Scrum Master should be what is the industry looking for.
If you are going to be working in an environment that uses PMP methodologies, maybe the PMI-ACP is the certification you require. However, for the vast majority of businesses and industries, the PSM Scrum Master certification will be much more beneficial, giving you a solid grounding in the framework and how it is applied.
We find that most people would begin here and look towards gaining the PMI-ACP certification at a later stage.
