The PSM (Professional Scrum Master) Certification is offered by an organisation called Scrum.org and the CSM (Certified Scrum Master) Certification is offered by an organisation called Scrum Alliance.
Both organisations were founded by the same person, Ken Schwaber, and are quite similar. The content is very similar, although there are some differences in the language and terminology used.
The main differences between the two occur in gaining and maintaining the certification.
Getting the Certification
In order to receive certification as a Professional Scrum Master, you must achieve at least 85% on the exam. The assessment requires that you are knowledgeable about how Scrum works in a real-world setting.
To achieve certification as a Certified Scrum Master, you must attend a Scrum Alliance approved course, achieve 68% in the assessment and be signed off as a Scrum Master by the course trainer.
Do I need to renew the Certification?
The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification needs to be renewed every two years, once you have achieved the Professional Scrum Master certification, there is no need to renew it.
The Professional Scrum Master (PSM) is an industry-led certification, once you achieved this qualification, it is deemed that you got the fundamental knowledge of the Scrum process and that is what the industry is looking for today.
