How can we keep learners engaged during internal training?
Trying to keep learners engaged during internal training sessions can be challenging for a number of reasons. When organising your internal training sessions, there are two primary things to keep in mind; Respect and Stress.
Respect
Each day of the course is a day when your delegates are not at their desks and is a day of lost work. You must respect that your delegates will need time to fully immerse themselves in the training in order to truly reap the benefits.
A way to ensure that your learners feel respected during the training is to explain to them at the beginning of the course how long the training is going to take, when the breaks are and, most importantly, explain the benefits that the training will have not just on their day to day activities but also to the business.
Stress
If a learner is very busy and has a lot of tasks that they’re working on, being asked to go on a training course can add to the stress they may already be feeling. They can spend the day worrying about the amount of work that is piling up on their desk or workstation.
A great way to reassure your delegates in these instances is to engage with their line manager. Ensure that the learner has genuine permission to attend. What we mean by this is that the line manager hasn’t given their permission begrudgingly or with conditions to keep their phones on in case of emergencies.
Ideally, each delegate's work should be looked after for them while they are attending the training. If your delegates are worried about not getting work done, they are not going to learn.
