What's an Excel Macro?
An Excel Macro is like a tape recorder for your Excel actions. Once you record steps you take in Excel (like formatting or data entry), a Macro can repeat those steps anytime you want. You don’t have to be a computer wizard to use it, but if you want to make your Macro more advanced, knowing a little VBA (a programming language) can help.
Why Use Macros in Excel?
Imagine doing the same tasks in Excel every day. Instead of repeating the same steps, wouldn't it be nice to just press a button and have it all done? That's what Macros do. Let's say you work at a water company, and you get bank data daily. Instead of manually formatting this data every time, a Macro can do it for you. With a Macro, you can:
- Load your data into Excel.
- Make the data look the way you want.
What's VBA in Simple Terms?
VBA stands for Visual Basic for Applications. Think of it as the language Macros use. But don't worry, even if you don't "speak" VBA, Excel can translate your actions into VBA for you. If you're curious, there are more in-depth articles about VBA.
Macro Tips:
- To use Macros, you might need to turn on the "Developer" tab in Excel.
- Macros can be risky since bad ones can harm your computer. Only run Macros you trust.
- If saving Macros, use the ".xlsm" format.
- Name your Macros clearly without spaces and add descriptions to help remember their purpose.
DCM's Excel Macros Training Course
Want to become a Macro pro? This course will teach you to use Macros efficiently, even diving into some programming. By the end, you'll:
- Know how to record Macros.
